About the area

In the early 1900's the Gulf, Mobile, and Ohio Railroad was built and ran North and South, intersecting the Illinois Central Railroad, which had been built in the 1880's. This event was significant in the growth of Ackerman. Cotton gins, a cotton compress and warehouse, and one of the largest combination sawmill and planer mills in the state were built bringing in additional workers who settled in the town.
