About the area |
The A.K. Shaifer House figures in the Civil War. It reportedly is the site of the first shot fired during the Battle of Port Gibson. It is still standing, but its walls show the scars from missiles fired during the battle. Union Headquarters and a hospital were at one time located in the structure. The house stands on what is now designated as âThe Port Gibson Battlefieldâ which is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. |
