About the area
The settlement of Port Gibson was occupied as far back as around 1730 and chartered a few years after the beginning of the 19th century. Several of the buildings built in the first half of the 1800's are still standing such as the Engelsing House and the The Restoration Café building. These homes were spared during the Civil War because Grant thought that Port Gibson was "too beautiful to burn". The Bernheimer House was occupied by Grant but was consumed by fire around 1900 and rebuilt one year later.
