About the area |
This is a fairly large city with a population in the neighborhood of 20,000. As you can well imagine, this city was named after a fellow named Clark who founded the city around 1848. It is located on the banks of the Sunflower River. With its location in the fertile alluvial plain called the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta; Clarksdale has long been recognized as an agricultural, commercial and cultural center for the North Delta. The Illinois Central Passenger Depot, a passenger depot of the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley railroad was built in the 1920's. This building, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, has been converted to a restaurant, club, bakery and other shops as part of the Blues Alley development. |
