People have probably never heard of this award before and you probably haven't either but it is true; Hernando was recently the first city in the state to be named the Healthiest Hometown by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation. The award is in recognition of a city in the state that is doing the most to promote a culture of health. The city's mayor is a wellness champion. He has spoken to groups across the nation to indicate how local governments can influence their citizens to live a healthy and help reduce obesity. To further promote healthy living Hernando has established a community garden near the city’s most disadvantaged neighborhood. In partnership with Head Start they have started teaching children at the earliest age about healthy eating and with faith communities are teaching the value of local eating and the importance helping the disadvantaged. to begin education , and working to teach young people
