People in Leakesville might be a little worried about having the South Mississippi Correctional Institution in their midst; but it probably provides employment opportunities for many in the community. This prison is unique; not only being the state’s newest state prison, the first prison in the state to receive accreditation from the American Correctional Association and the first state prison in Mississippi to be accredited by the National Commission on Correctional Health Care but its minimum, medium and maximum security male offenders take part in the institution's para-military “Boot Camp Program”.
