| About the area |
Gulfport's Small Craft Harbor includes Urie Pier and Jones Park, the largest public park on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. After the devastation of Small Craft Harbor by Hurricane Katrina; Urie Pier was rebuilt and a master plan is in place for redevelopment of the area. The plan includes development of a new marina, fisherman’s retail village, a public square and bus stop, boat launch and the redesign of Jones Park as well as an educational boardwalk and bike/pedestrian path. The work incorporating the plan is due for completion by late 2011 around the same time as a new casino opens near the harbor. The Ken Combs Pier,also destroyed by the hurricane, has been reconstructed with new landscaping and a new visitor/boat trailer parking lot. |
