About the area |
Belzoni, chartered around 1895 sits in the middle of the Yazoo-Mississippi Rivers Delta. Belzoni was named for Giovanni Battista Belzoni.Don't ask why; Belzoni was an Italian showman, engineer and explorer of Egyptian antiquities who was born in the last quarter of the 18th century and earned a living in circuses in England, Spain and Portugal. The Ethel Wright Mohamed Stitchery Museum is dedicated to and displays the work of the woman they called Mississippi's Grandma Moses of stitchery; who "painted" the stories of her family's life on fabric with beautiful and intricate stitches.
