The University of Mississippi calls Oxford home. This state university of over 18,000 students (including campuses in Jackson, Tupelo, and Southaven and Medical Center) was chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in the mid 1840's. In addition to its College of Liberal Arts and Graduate School; the university has schools of Law, of Engineering, of Education, of Business Administration, of Nursing, of Medicine, of Pharmacy, of Dentistry and of Health Related Professions. This city, which was the home of Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner, has much to offer in the Arts centered primarily around the university with its Gertrude C. Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Museum and Ole Miss Theatre as well as numerous art galleries, the Powerhouse Community Arts Center and various venues venues around the city offering the sounds of jazz, blues, and rock music. |
