| About the area |
Several enterprising businessmen saw the opportunity, when the Kansas, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad began traveling through Lee and Monroe Counties, to establish the City of Nettleton in the late 1880's. With the presence of the railroad it was possible to ship wood to every state in the nation and large quantities to international markets; leading to the early establishment of the lumber business in Nettleton. However nothing lasts forever; and after the best timber was exhausted, Nettleton continued as a farming community and development of the railroad led to its establishment as a small city. Amazingly enough; In the 1950s the residents of Nettleton chose not to elect public officials and the State of Mississippi rescinded Nettleton's charter. However in the 1960's the city was reincorporated so the community could receive state funding for a medical clinic. |
