| About the area |
Verona played an important part in the Civil war because of its location on the G M & O railroad. It was a loading point to ship soldiers and supplies to Virginia and other places as the Confederate army needed them. A second railroad in Lee County was built through Tupelo rather than Verona, ending the city's usefulness and spelling the death knoll for many of the businesses which moved to Tupelo. |
