Fort Pemberton, which lies just West of Greenwood, played a pivotal role in the Civil War. This fort whose construction of cotton bales covered with earth; was built to halt General Ulysses S. Grant’s advance. Greenwood’s Cottonlandia Museum displays a model of the 1863 battle at Fort Pemberton. The museums exhibits include Mississippi artwork and articles representative of local, military, and agricultural history as well as a terrific collection of Native American artifacts. |
