About the area |
Macon lies on the Noxubee river. The town of Macon came into existence in the 1830's at the point near the center of the lands in Mississippi ceded by the Choctaw Indian Nation and was chosen as the seat of the government. A temporary courthouse was built shortly thereafter. Early settlers to the area grew cotton on large plantations but grain and lumber mills were also early industrial additions.
