| About the area |
This is a small town; but probably because of lower real estate taxes here than in most other towns in Mississippi; housing in the town tends to be newer construction. Algoma Town Park has a walking track which is illuminated at night and is the home of the annual Algoma Cross-tie Festival. When the Gulf and Chicago Railroad extended its line south from Pontotoc in the early 1900's it caused the relocation of Algoma and brought life to the town.. The major interest of the railroad was the carrying of timber, passengers, and tradesman. Timber helped to sustain industry and life in the town. A tie yard stretched a long distance along the tracks and growth continued because of the quantity of available timber in the area and the H.B. Owens Tie Company. Algoma called itself the Crosstie Capital of the World and this history is celebrated annually by the staging of the Algoma Cross-tie Festival. The festival features a motorcycle ride, local music, food including barbecue and vendors with various crafts.
