About the area |
The early 1820s a family settled in the area and named it for themselves, Steen's Creek. Around 1900, the booming Steen's Creek's cotton industry caused the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad, which was building a railline from Jackson to Gulfport, to take a look at the town as a location for a depot. A landowner in Steen's Creek donated the land for the railroad's depot, with the proviso that the railroad name it after his wife, Florence. The City of Florence has a new Community Center which adjoins Hemphill City park. The main feature of the park is its soccer field. |
