| About the area |
The part of the land of the Choctaw Nation which was a wooded swamp later became Sumner. The land was settled by several families including the Sumners who began clearing the vegetation of the swamp around 1873 to create Sumner. In roughly the first general store was built and soon was followed by the establishment of other stores. Around 1890 the post office was established in the general store. When floods in the 1920's and early 1930's plagued the portion of town near Cassidy bayou; a temporary levee, removed in the 1940's, was built around Sumner High School.
