When the Choctaw Nation sold their northwestern lands to the United States around 1820 with the Treaty of Doak’s Stand; the large area of Mississippi in which Yazoo City was to be located was opened to settlers. Around 1825, a new, young, half-breed Choctaw Chief, was granted one square mile of land for himself, the exact site of Yazoo City today. Three years later he sold his land to a group of proprietors who soon began planning his vision of a year-round steamboat port for shipping cotton to New Orleans. The proprietors had the land surveyed and laid out and sold the plots by auction; which resulted in the sale of most of the property in 2 days. With the sellout of all the streets; a bank, two hotels, businesses and homes soon followed. As the year 1840 dawned there were close to 1000 residents in the town and close to 25,000 bales of cotton were being shipped each year.
