About the area |
During the 1880's and the 1890's the Hardin area experienced settlement by cattle and sheep ranchers. In the first part of the 20th century when the tribal lands adjacent to the Yellowstone River and the lower Bighorn Valley were ceded to the Federal government; Hardin was founded and the area was opened to homesteading. It did not take long, less than 20 years, before Hardin was fully settled. At this time the original railroad depot, which had been located across the Little Bighorn River from the town, was moved to the South side of Hardin. The Big Horn County Historical museum is a complex of over 25 historic buildings which were moved here from various locations in the county. In addition there are two buildings with displays of farm equipment, horse drawn wagons and antique vehicles. The visitor center of the State of Montana is also located in a new building here. The annual Fundraiser for the Hardin Volunteer Fire department, Extreme Days, is held in August. The fair has such exciting events as the Mud Drags, Herby Derby and Tough Truck, Motorcycle and ATV races.
