About the area |
For a long time Crow Indians occupied the valley where Red Lodge lies. In the early 1880's when coal deposits were discovered in the Red Lodge area, those portions, where the discoveries were made, were ceded from the Crow Indian Reservation to allow for development of mines. In addition to move the coal the Rocky Fork Railroad was built. As the Crow reservation grew smaller; homesteaders moved in to acquire the land. Hundreds of immigrants, Finns, Scots, Irish, Italians and Slavs came to work in the mines of the Rocky Fork Coal company. With the arrival of strip mining in Southeastern Montana in the 1920's Red Lodge coal was doomed. However, tourism, recreation and ranching have taken the place of coal and bootlegging. The annual Red Lodge rodeo, deemed by some to be the Home of Champions Rodeo, is held in early July at the rodeo grounds. The Carbon County Historical Society & Museum has on display simulated Coal and Hard Rock Mines; memorabilia from the Linderman Brothers, the The Riding Greenough's and the Home of Champions Rodeo, Crow artifacts, the Waples Gun and Projectile Points; Carbon County Family Home and Personal Items and items representative of immigrant history.
