About the area |
Fort Benton lies along the Missouri river. It bills itself as the birthplace of Montana; assuming such a title because in 1847 it was a fur trading center the first enterprise and settlement in the state. It is considered a national historic landmark. The eventual discovery of gold in the Montana and Idaho Territories brought fortune seekers, outlaws, merchants and madams to this town where whiskey flowed like water. Trails into Canada soon carried gangs of outlaws to prey on many. Steamboats were important to the economy of the city until the railroads ended their domination of transportation and the city's significance as an inland port. Old Fort Benton is undergoing continual reconstruction in an attempt to preserve this piece of history. |
