About the area
Baker's beginning can be traced to the arrival of the Milwaukee railroad during the 1900's. A driller looking for water here around 1915 got more than he bargained for when he discovered natural gas. Oil followed with production of both continuing into the 1960's and 1970's. At the O'Fallon Historical Museum in Baker you can see the stuffed and mounted Steer Montana a Roan Polled Shorthorn Breed that was born in 1923; lived 15 years and 4 months; was exhibited when alive by a local rancher in traveling shows and grew to be the largest bovine animal in the world. The museum complex includes a tar paper homestead house, the Duffield homestead house and the Lambert house, each containing artifacts and other items from the early 1900’s. The trading post, barber shop, dress shop and parlor are representative of Baker’s early days. One of the buildings holds early farm equipment including a Yellow Fellow thrashing machine from 1900 and other vehicles. The main building is the original Fallon County Jail and contains military artifacts from local service men and women in World Wars I and II.
