Kalispell was founded around 1891 by an official of the Great Northern Railroad. Flathead lake is a place where you do not have to head out in a boat to catch large fish. At the South end of the lake you can rent a boat and head out to Wild Horse island, a primitive park inhabited by wild horses and other animals. A hike on this island will prove to be unforgettable. The Hockaday Museum of Art has a permanent exhibit consisting of its collection of works by significant authors, photographers and painters as well as Glacier Park collectibles such as vintage maps and hand-tinted photographs. The artists featured are known for their paintings of cowboy life, pioneer life and natural settings of the West.
