| About the area |
Glacier county was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Conflicts with the Blackfeet Tribe and hardships of living here made the area unattractive to pioneers and the territory was visited by only a few trappers and fur traders. However in the 1920's a large oil strike near Shelby changed all that and by around 1931 a well in Cut Bank was in production and by the 1930's production had advanced to where the Cut Bank field was doing exceptionally well and became Montana's top ranking oil field in 1936. Two sites from the Lewis and Clark expedition trail Camp Disappointment and Meriwether Lewis Fight are in the Cut Bank area.
