About the area |
Around 1880 two brothers came to the Stanford area with close to 1,000 head of sheep and purchased land covering approximately 100,000 acres. They named the place they settled for their old home Stanfordville which is located in Duchess County, New York. The Judith Basin County museum is located next to County Court house. Its exhibits are representative of the history of the county and the stagecoach era and something of the train era. The museum displays include historical pictures, the clothing of early homesteaders, history books, a collection of over 2,000 sets of salt and pepper shakers, a collection of about 5,000 buttons and Indian artifacts. There is also a display of prints of some of Charles M. Russell's, the cowboy artist's, paintings. You might want to come to Hobson in early September to see the whimsical, cleverly decorated and sculpted hay figures lining the route from Hobson to Utica to Windham for the annual What the Hay contest.
