About the area
When the Great Northern railroad ran through this area around 1891, the town was a watering and coal loading station for its steam engines. As homesteaders came to the area, the town experienced rapid growth and was named after the hometown in Pennsylvania of the first telegraph operator here. The Chester Sports complex, an illuminated field is used for high school football games, soccer and baseball games. Even horseshoers have found a home in this complex. The town also has a recently opened swimming pool complex. The Liberty Village Art center and gallery is known for its local, state, and national visual and graphic art shows and workshops and the Liberty County Performing Arts council produces live performances throughout the year. The Liberty County museum is located in what was the First Church of the Community. In addition to this building the museum includes outside center and living exhibits, Hay Coulee School educational exhibits and the Gau Building Historical exhibits. You can sit in the sheepherder’s wagon or look through the extensive collection of original newspapers, pictures, obituaries, wedding articles, local historical books, original scrap books, year books and farm histories.
