Virginia City Justice Court

Virginia City Court is in the Fifth judicial district of Montanan and handles civil and traffic infractions for Montana county, except those occurring in Ennis, and for Virginia City. US 287, SR 84 and SR 287 are the only major roads running through Madison county. SR 287 passes through Virginia City.

The town of Bannack grew overnight to serve the miners working the first major gold strike in Montana at Grasshopper Creek. When a group of men, camping just South of present day Virginia City they discovered the great Alder Gulch gold strike in the Spring of 1863. Unfortunately they inadvertently gave away their secret to the folks in Bannick; causing a big rush from Bannick to Alder Gulch leading to the erection of Virginia City's first buildings. Although no mainline railroad reached as far as Virginia City around 1902 going only to Alder; The recent purchase and the rebuilding of a Baldwin Locomotive by the Escanaba & Lake Superior railroad, originally bought by the Mexican Railroad around 1902, and the relocation of the Northern Pacific depot from Harrison, Montana to this city; allowed the Alder Gulch Short Line, a mile and a half railroad between Virginia City and Nevada City to be completed. Now visitors can take this short historic ride. All through the summer there are concerts at different spots in Virginia City
