About the area
Around 1876, the owner of Brewer’s Springs sold it to a local doctor and the town which grew around it was called White Sulphur Springs. Although Native Americans had used used the springs for their so called healing powers, the settlers did not know of them until the discovery of the Brewer Springs. A hotel was built at the site and John Ringling of circus fame planned to build an exclusive Victorian resort. Unfortunately the great depression interfered with his plans and the resort was not built. However, the hot springs are still available and are now called Spa Hot Springs. As it was for many years the area around the city remains a productive ranching community. There are many activities in this area available to the resident and visitor alike. The Silver Crest Nordic Trail system with its over 12 miles of trails is great for x-country skiing. The Kings Hill area is available for snowmobiling with close to 200 miles of groomed and marked trails. Deer, elk, antelope, bear and mountain lions are plentiful in nearby areas providing a hunter's paradise. The trails on public land lead to areas of spectacular scenery.
