About the area
Livingston is mountainous country with three mountain ranges, the Crazy, Absaroka and Bridger mountains, around it. The Yellowstone river, alongside the city, attracts many fishermen for its trout. A one time hunting ground for Native Americans, the arrival of the railroad caused the city to blossom. When Teddy Roosevelt created Yellowstone as a national park, thousands of visitors came through the town each week on their way to the park. Early in July, cowboys and cowgirls from all over North America come here to compete in the annual Livingston Roundup rodeo. A three story 1906 schoolhouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the home of the Yellowstone Gateway museum. The exhibits are related to the peoples of the area, the significance of the railroad industry in westward expansion and the role of Livingston as the original gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Calamity Jane, Buffalo Bill Cody, and the Plummer Gang who inhabited the area at one time, are also represented by exhibits. Don't forget to see the original blacksmith shop and one-room schoolhouse. There are over 100 art galleries in town which showcase the work of local artists. The Livingston Depot now functions as an exhibition center and museum and each Summer sponsors a Festival of the Arts. Not to be missed is the "The Big Railroad Blues Festival" held at this facilty each year.
