About the area |
Not only was Plentywood a trading post but it's located at the site where Sitting Bull and his Sioux people surrendered to the U. S. Army. As the 20 century began outlaws hug out at every nook and cranny and even Butch Cassidy established a rest station in the Big Muddy Valley, to the West of Plentywood. The Sheridan County Free museum and Civic center has many displays which capture the history of this area. These include photographs of the historic past, fossils, a dress shop, an early dentist office and an early school room. In addition there are displays of cowboy gear, Native American artifacts and carriages. At the museum you can also see Dooley Post Office boxes, delicate kerosene lanterns, baby buggies, large steam engines and threshers. There is a mural on the wall of the Civic center which is over 75 feet long and has scenes depicting the history of Sheridan county from the time of the early native Americans until the present era. If you go to the fairgrounds you can see the Old Tractor club's collection of threshers, tractors, plows, wagons and other paraphernalia of early day farming in Sheridan County.
