About the area

Incorporated in the late 1790s and named for Gov. Samuel Ashe, Ashe County has an estimated population of 24400 people served by Jefferson City as its county seat. More than 425 square miles of territory bordered by territories of Virginia and Tennessee are part of the rolling plateau at 3250 feet above sea level of elevation. The waters of the New River known since the late 1990s as the "American Heritage River" refresh this land of great farming lands and lovely scenery views such as the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Cherokee National Forest. Ashe has 19 townships including Helton, West Jefferson, Laurel, Horse Creek, and Grassy Creek.
