About the area

This member of the regional High Country Council of Governments was named after Waightstill Avery, a colonel in the American Revolutionary War and a successful State Attorney general. This community of gorgeous trees was established in the 1910s with almost 250 square miles of extension from territories of Watauga, Caldwell and Mitchell Counties which are today neighbors and commercial partners of Avery County. The estimated population in this land is close to 17200 people reporting a median income for a household of $30630, with more than 1/10 of the residents struggling with extreme poverty.
