About the area

Table Rock is the symbol of this territory which received its first settlements back in the 16th century, when the Fort San Juan was built and a very cruel chapter between Spanish and Native Americans was written. Today Burke is home of more than 89000 residents and its 515 square miles of extension were part of Rowan County until the 1770s. This section of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton metro area and member of the regional Western Piedmont Council of Governments is the proud homeland of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest. This land has several communities such as Drexel, Connelly Springs, and Glen Alpine; sharing border lines with Avery, Catawba, Cleveland, McDowell, Rutherford, and Caldwell Counties.
