Thirteen townships, four cities, and more than 10 unincorporated cities constitute the map of Chatham County located within the Piedmont geographic region which includes Baldwin, Gulf, Haw River, Wilsonville, New Hope, Fearrington, Siler City, and Williams. This territory traditionally supported by the agriculture and the dairy activities has been forced to diversify and change its activities to maintain its economy due the poor conditions of the soils and the need of small-medium owners of dairy farms to sell their "businesses". Today, this county founded in the 1770s is still maintaining the coal mining operations and it has become one of the state leaders in the poultry industry with an admirable management of resources and markets mainly focused on the Siler City and Moncure territories.
