This territory founded in the 1660s has a total area of 233 square miles of extension nested in between the lands of Gates, Perquimans, Washington, Bertie, and Hertford Counties. Home of almost 14600 people, Chowan County is another member of the Albemarle Commission regional council of government and it has a very extensive racial makeup including White Non Hispanic, African American, Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, Hispanic, and other racial groups residing in its territory with a population density of more than 35 people per square mile.
