Construction, furniture, health care, and textile represent the most common industries for the residents of McDowell County founded in the early 1840s, which is served by Marion city as its county seat and it was the former homeland of Cherokee and Catawba Indians. With a total area of 446 square miles of extension, this territory of the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission regional council of governments is home of part of the Blue Ridge Parkway and a portion of the Pisgah National Forest.
