About the area

When Grand Forks county was created between 1872 and 1872 it was strangely enough named for the village of Grand Forks which already existed. After suffering a flood and fires in 1997 several historic buildings have been saved from demolition and preserved including the Metropolitan Opera House, circa 1890, with its Richardsonian Romanesque construction and the original Classical Revival style St. Michael’s Hospital and Nurses’ residence, circa 1910. In addition there are four designated historic districts in Grand Forks; Near Southside, Downtown Grand Forks, Riverside and the University of North Dakota .
