About the area |
Prior to 1910, the Northern Pacific and the Chicago, Milwaukee, & St. Paul railroads built two railroad lines westward from Mandan, North Dakota and McLaughlin, South Dakota. In the Spring of that year the Milwaukee Land Company of Chicago laid out a town site. The German-Russian residents living in nearby Leipzig, desiring a location near the railroad soon moved there and when a post office was established it was called New Leipzig. A company established at that time, Hertz Brothers Hardware, is still doing business in Grant county. With its German-Russian heritage you know this town would hold an Oktoberfest. This annual event, North Dakota's first authentic Oktoberfest, is held here on the last weekend in September. |
