If you are riding on IS 94 you will pass Steele just to the South, but SR 3 will take you into town. |
About the area |
About 14 years after the Northern Pacific railroad had been granted land, around 1864, for the construction of railroads and telegraph lines; an enterprising gentleman, for whom the town was named purchased from them the land which is present day Steele and plotted a community. He hoped to attract the state capitol to Steele by constructing a building for the legislature. Although this did not occur he was able to sell the building to Kidder county and the county courthouse is now located in it. The Kidder County museum has on display household and military items and rooms with artifacts of a school room, restaurant and doctor's office. Be sure to wander over to WoodHouse for a cup of coffee and see Grandma's kitchen. There are also displays here dedicated to veterans of years gone by. In addition to its own golf course and disc golf course the city has a swimming pool, parks, playgrounds and ballfields for the residents enjoyment. There are plenty of local lakes in the area for boating and fishing. |
