A power plant, ethanol plant, mining company, U.S. Corps of Engineers and the Underwood Public School provide the majority of the employment in this town. Provisions for recreation can be found at Poolside Park with its outdoor pool, tennis courts, sand volleyball pits, horseshoe pits, basketball hoops, playground, an ice skating rink with a warming house and public restrooms and at Pioneer park with several picnic tables and a playground sitting below towering spruces and hardwoods. Underwood City Hall doubles as a community gym. Thew McLean County fair is held at the fairgrounds in this city in June. The fair features a parade, the Mighty Thomas carnival, 4H exhibits and competition, craft and vendor booths, a petting zoo, free pig roast and stage shows.
