About the area
Pick City lies next to Lake Sakakawea State park. In the 1940's construction of the Garrison Dam, by the the Bureau of Reclamation and Army Corps of Engineers, brought many people to this area of the Missouri basin. In the Summer of 1946 a town to be called Pick City was laid out. It was named for the leading General of the Corps of Engineers who helped to develop the dam project. During construction of the dam the city was host to many onlookers which brought business to the area. The state park offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation. The Famous Tailrace, just Southeast of the city, which is the powerhouse water outlet of the dam, supports boat fishing particularly in January through April when the rest of the state's lakes are frozen.
