About the area
Mandam was founded around 1881 at the spot where a railroad bridge crossed the Missouri river linking the Eastern and Western parts of the railroad spanning the continent. A statue of Theodore Roosevelt on horse back, given to the city by a former mayor and lifelong friend of the president, sits in the Northern Pacific depot ellipse on Main Street. Fort Abraham Lincoln, located a short distance South of Mandam, was an infantry and cavalry post from which Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer and the Seventh cavalry rode out to the battle at the Little Big Horn. Parts of the post, including the Custer House, have been reconstructed. Independence Day is celebrated in a way in this town. The celebration starts of with might possibly be the region's largest parade featuring equestrians, marching bands and floats; followed by the Classic Car parade. Some where in there the towns folk manage to fit in the world's longest Macarena dance. around this time stay for the excitement of the annual Mandan rodeo, a tradition on this holiday, held at at Dacotah Centennial park. The Mandam museum in the former Northern Pacific Beanery building with its World War II exhibit is another spot worth a visit.
