New Salem Municipal Court

SR 31 comes into the New Salem from the North and meets CR 139 at the beginning of the town while CR 85 enters town from the South.

By chance a lone immigrant with his equipment was left along the railroad at a halfway level spot West of Mandan in the Spring of 1883. He was to be the first settler to New Salem. However he was followed a scant day later by other settlers left by the railroad. On School Hill at the North edge of town sits Salem Sue, a fiberglass replica of a Holstein cow, almost 38 feet high and close to 50 feet long. She is intended as a tribute to the area's dairy industry. Nine buildings including a school, church, blacksmith shop, 1910 house, railroad depot and displays of farm machinery, cars, tractors and clothing form the New Salem Historical Society/Custer Trail museum. The New Salem parks are City park, North park and the Jeff Heid Memorial Tennis and Basketball courts which are illuminated and can be used for badminton and volleyball as well.
