New Town Municipal Court

SR 23 runs through New Town.

The creation and the location of New Town began with the authorization of the Garrison Dam and Reservoir project by the US Congress around 1944. A few short years later people in Van Hook and Sanish realizing that their towns would be underwater with the creation of the reservoir were able to secure funds from the US government to vacate their towns and plan for a new town site. The Army Corp of Engineers agreed to lay out the new town site, plan highways and streets and build them or finance the building of streets, alleys and sidewalks. A small building was moved to the Main Street of the new town and used as an office for the Sanish-Van Hook Relocation Company which sold lots in the town and the sale began in the Fall of 1950. In August of each year the Little Shell Pow Wow is held at the Pow Wow Grounds, West of New Town with traditional dancing performed by dancers in beautiful handmade costumes. There is an opportunity to buy some handcrafted items by local and regional artists at the annual Craft fair held at the New Town Civic center in December.
