About the area |
Wahpeton lies on the border with Minnesota and next to the Minnesota city of Breckenridge. Much of the city's economy is dependent on manufacturing with one third of the workers employed in plants in this city. Wahpeton is home to North Dakota State College of Science. Among the animals that can be seen at the Chahinkapa zoo are Snow Leopards, Black-handed Spider Monkeys, five species of Pheasants, Australian Black Swans, Red Kangaroos and Bactrian Camels. Next to the zoo is a wonder that your kids will love, the fully restored Prairie Rose carousel. This ride, built around 1926, is only one of the 150 original wooden horse carousels still operating in the United States. Folks here don't generally brag about the catfish fishing in the Red river; but along the river in this city sits "Wahpper" the world's largest catfish, a structure close to 40 feet long and 12 feet high. Sometimes folks get carried away and call Wahpeton "The Catfish Capital of the North". The city has several recreational facilities such as the municipal swimming pool, the Stern's Sports Arena Ice Skating rink, the community center and the State College of Science activities center. |
