About the area
Jamestown emphasizes its claim to the title of Buffalo city with its 26-foot-tall, 60-ton concrete giant statue of a buffalo at Frontier village known as Dakota Thunder and its National Buffalo museum where the story of the bison and their place in the history of the American plains are told through interpretive panels, artifacts and original artwork. The museum owns a herd of buffalo which includes three rare white buffalo. Frontier village is made up of buildings from the frontier villages of North Dakota which have been moved to this site. Each of the buildings contain antiques and artifacts. Some of the buildings found here are reknowned Western author Louis L'Amour writer's shack, the first railroad depot in Jamestown and an old schoolhouse. At the Stutsman County Memorial museum, housed in the old Lutz mansion, you will find artifacts including hand-built models of actual Jamestown buildings, instruments and guns. On the grounds of the museum you will also find a replica of the bandstand railroad gazebo the original of which stood in the Northern Pacific Railroad park in downtown Jamestown.
