Within the building that is the Burt County courthouse you will find the county court and the district court (Suite 11) and they are both part of their respective Sixth judicial districts of Nebraska. US 77 runs along the Western part of Burt county and along the way meets both SR 32 and SR 51 while US 75 runs through the Eastern part of the county and meets the same two state highways forming a box of roads around the county.
About the area
The name of this city was given to it by one of the early settlers who had visited a place by that name in the Far West. A group from Council Bluffs, Iowa formed the Nebraska Stock Company and in its name claimed a piece of land four miles square at the present site of Tekamah during the Fall of 1854. It was almost one year later that the claim became a permanent settlement and a little colony from La Salle County, Illinois moved to the area from elsewhere in the county. The population at the time consisted of a mere 24 souls. In 1855 this city like others in Nebraska suffered through a protracted drouth followed by a severe Winter. Even as late as 1880 there were less than 1,000 people living here and the commercial part of the city consisted of five general, two hardware, three drug and three millinery stores, two agricultural implement depots, two elevators, four blacksmith shops and two lumberyards, four physicians and five lawyers. The Tekamah Bridge is one of the two oldest examples in the state of the concrete rigid frame bridge, developed in the early 1920's in Westchester County, New York and used for federal projects during the Depression. You would not think the completion of a small bridge project would call for a big celebration; but when this one was completed in late 1934, the opening was celebrated with a town dance on it.
