It would not be hard to find the county court or the district court (Box 217), each of which is in their respective Twelfth judicial district of Nebraska, in the Cheyenne County courthouse. It seems that the major roads in Cheyenne county, IS 80, US 30 and US 385, come together around Sidney. A lesser road, SR 19, runs South from US 30 and SR 17E and SR 17F link US 30/385 with IS 385 in the Eastern part of the county.
About the area
Around 1867, the end of the Union Pacific railroad tracks encampment called Sidney was the scene of altercations between the Indians and the railroad workers. The army was sent to end this situation and the end of two years the Indians were routed allowing development to continue. Around 1870 a representative from Sidney was sent to Lincoln to persuade the governor to include them in the activities of the state. In the summer of that year Cheyenne was declared a county by proclamation with Sidney as its county seat. When the gold rush to the Black Hills occurred, Sidney became a wild place with saloons, dance halls, gambling and variety shows operating around the clock. By 1876, the citizens were in control of the town, however the cattle industry brought rustlers and horse thieves to the town. The army drove them out and the Union Pacific took to placing special officers on their passenger trains. Two sites in Sidney reminiscent of those wild days are The Fort Sidney complex with its powder house, married officer's quarters and Cheyenne County Museum and the refurbished post commander's home with 1800's decor and articles; and Sidney Boot Hill cemetery. The shelter house and picnic shelter located in Legion Park and the Living Memorial Gardens gazebo are available for rental. Other sites in town available for rental are the lodge, multi-purpose building and cabins at Lodgepole Valley Youth camp and meeting rooms and gyms in the community center.
