Colfax County Courthouse

The county court court and district court are both located in the Colfax County courthouse and each is in their respective Fifth judicial district of Nebraska. SR 15 running down the length of Colfax county meets SR 91 in the North and Road F in the South of the county.

Schuyler was originally the town of Shell Creek Station and benefitted from the arrival of the Union Pacific railroad around 1866. Colfax county was formed the by the division of the huge Platte county around 1869 and one year later the town was renamed Schuyler. The first groups to emigrate to the city were Czech, Irish and German. The Schuyler/Colfax County museum is an interesting place to visit if you want to get a historic perspective of the county. It has collections of memories from the Civil War and WWI & II, Pawnee Indian artifacts, Wells Abbott Nieman Mill items and close to 150 dolls. The Jim Kluck Memorial Railside Green is what was an abandoned dusty railbed and is now the site of the Nebraska Statewide arboretum. The Oak Ballroom, built in 1937 by the Works Project Administration and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a central meeting place for people in town. It takes its name from the huge natural timbers and beams cut from native oak trees and the mural above the fireplace is of a covered wagon on the Mormon trail.
