Garfield County Courthouse

The county court (Box 431) and the district court (Box 218) are both located in the Garfield County courthouse. They are each part of their respective Eighth judicial district of Nebraska. SR 91 runs through the southern part of Garfield county and meets the only other road of consequence, SR11, in Burwell.

Burwell is dependent mainly on the agriculture sector for its economy with many residents employed on local farms and farms and ranches. Indicative of this business bas is the Burwell Livestock Market acknowledged as one of the largest cattle auctions in the Sandhills. This carries over creating excitement with the annual week long Nebraska's Big rodeo in July held at the Rodeo Grounds in Burwell. A Pre-Rodeo celebration with music is held before this event and a parade follows the rodeo. There is even a statue in Burwell's downtown business district called “Cowboy Hang-Time” which is of a bucking horse and rider. The Garfield County Historical museum is located in the former Dr. Cram’s Hospital. Exhibits are displayed in the museum's library, surgery room, Cowboy/Indian room, tool room, military room, parlor, bedroom and country school room.
