Johnson County Courthouse

In the Johnson County courthouse, you will find both the county court and the district court (Box 416) which are in the First judicial districts of Nebraska. SR 50 passes through Johnson county first meeting SR 41 and then US 136 in Tecumseh as it passes East/West through the county.

You have to think that this city was named after the great Shawnee chief Tecumseh who also is presented as a statue at the Naval academy in Annapolis, Maryland. You can get a good understanding of the appearance of this town through its early years and into the 20th century by strolling through the fifty square blocks of the Tecumseh Architectural district which is listed on the National Register of Historic places. In the district there are examples of the different building types and building materials used in the city. One of the buildings here is the two story Tecumseh Opera House, circa 1880. Two events where you are likely to find the city's residents are the annual Demolition derby at the Johnson County fairgrounds in June and the Johnson County fair on the third weekend every August. The fair is an opportunity for the county 4-H to show their projects, animals and skills and compete for prizes. There are other events at this fair such as a carnival, grandstand shows, an antique tractor pull, Veteran's parade and kids rodeo. The fair comes to a close with the Big Fair parade is held on Sunday evening.
